Travel Tips: Athens Greece Airport
The Athens airport, formally known as the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, opened in March 2001. Its potential capacity is 50 million passengers a year. It was developed to replace the old international airport which had a capacity of 11 million passengers a year. The airport was constructed over a period of five years and it cost Euro 2.1 billion to develop the Athens airport. The airport is situated 30 km to the east of Athens and is capable of handling 65 take-offs and landing per hour.
Metro Line 3 connects the Athens airport to the Syntagma square in central Athens. Central Athens is also accessible from Athens airport by a 24-hour bus service and by taxis. The Athens airport boasts a wonderful shopping center rated as one of the best in Europe. The shopping center has more than 50 select stores and 14 dining outlets that offer choice and varied food to discerning visitors.
The Athens International Airport has a permanent exhibition that is dedicated to Eleftherios Venizelos, the maker of modern Greece. Athens airport also hosts art exhibitions and cultural events such as book presentations. This is a great way of making the airport visitor’s stay more interesting. The airport has a retail park located 2 km away from the main terminal and is serviced by airport bus lines. Brands such as IKEA, Leroy Merlin, Factory Outlet, and Shell Gas have set up shop in this plaza.
Athens airport offers a baggage storage facility managed by Pacific Travel. It’s an ideal storage for your luggage if your stay in Athens is going to be a short one. However, keep in mind that there is only one queue for leaving and collecting luggage, so either process can be a little time consuming.
