Visit: Syntagma Square, Athens Greece

Syntagma

Syntagma is located in Central Athens and is a conveyance hub for all of Athens. It is well-connected by both bus and train. Syntagma is also the word for the Greek constitution. Syntagma is a good place to start your travels around Athens. If you take up lodgings in a hotel around Syntagma then you are well-placed to systematically cover all the sites that Athens has to offer. The districts of Plaka, Monastiraki, Psiri, and Kolonaki are quite close to Syntagma.

Most of the iconic Greek sites are close to Syntagma. These include the agora, the Acropolis, and several churches. Many of these churches date back to the middle ages. To orient you, the Syntagma Metro Station lies beneath Amalias Avenue. The Greek parliament is located on the street across the Amalias Avenue. It is surrounded by the very extensive National Gardens which are open to the public.

A very distinctive and large water fountain adorns the center of Syntagma and you can access free high-speed wireless Internet at the Square, courtesy Municipality of Athens.

The changing of guard ceremony that takes place every hour in the space between the square and the parliament building is worth seeing and even capturing on video. Two respectable and beautiful museums located near Syntagma are the Numismatic Museum, which houses a formidable collection of Greek coins from across the ages, and the National Historical Museum, which is home to many historic documents relevant to the birth of the modern state of Greece.
