For centuries, Psiri was one of Athens most notorious neighborhoods. While Psiri has always had its share of tavernas and lively drinking establishments, it was a section of town populated by immigrants from other parts of Greece. Some of these settlers established working class communities of factory workers, merchants and craftsmen. Others became petty criminals and underworld figures, giving Psiri a reputation as a neighborhood off limits to travelers.
