Athens International Airport received much-needed renovations for the 2004 Olympics, and now boasts a well-organized layout and comfortable spaces. The airport serves more than 16 million travelers annually and was named after the Greek politician Eleftherios Venizelos.

The airport has become increasingly popular as a gateway to Asia and the Middle East. It is also known for its continuous investment in pioneering technology, and is Airbus A380 ready, having been certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The airport is 16 miles from the city’s center (which is about a €20 cab ride) and serves most major airlines. Not a fan of the layover? Delta, Air France, and Olympic Airlines have direct international flights from New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Toronto, while United Airlines will stop in Frankfurt or Munich changing carriers to Lufthansa.

Travelers flying within the continent will likely use Olympic Airlines and can expect tickets to cost around 200-300 Euros when departing from London, Paris, Munich and others. Despite the airport’s lauded improvements, Greece is a land of the unpredictable.
